This weekend was all about wedding cake. Finishing baking, frosting and delivering the cake for my roommate's wedding, then topping it with pink peonies. I loved it! (Are you supposed to compliment your own cakes? Oops, oh well!) Other than the wedding it was a low key weekend, recovering from a bit too much celebrating and visiting my friend's new puppy who has polka dotted paws. Hope your weekend was lovely, friends!

A Succulent Wedding Cake

Untitled

I made another wedding cake this weekend, would you like to see?

It was for my friends Ian and Ashleigh (their story was featured in Style Me Pretty!), who can only agree on red velvet when it comes to cake, so I made a chocolate cake with cream cheese frosting. I’ve loved the look of two tiered cakes for awhile now, it feels casual but still special. And Ashleigh selected a perfect garden rose and two pretty succulents to top it off. I loved it!

Wedding Season: Cheeky Flasks

Untitled

*I'm not a wedding blogger by any means (just a seasoned wedding guest), but with wedding season upon us I thought I'd share a few posts for brides and wedding guests alike. The last post in the series is a little something to get you through the reception...*

For the final installment of the wedding season posts, I thought we'd focus on a little something to help you through the reception if you're a wedding guest this summer. To be prepared (and a bit cheeky), why not tuck a flask into your purse for the night? I did for one of the three weddings I've attended this summer :)

So, if you find yourself at a dry wedding or in need of a little more oomph in your cocktail, here's some fun flasks to come to your rescue.

Fess up, folks. Have you ever taken a flask to a wedding?

Wedding Season: Off-Registry Gifts

Untitled

*I'm not a wedding blogger by any means (just a seasoned wedding guest), but with wedding season upon us I thought I'd share a few posts for brides and wedding guests alike. Today: off-registry gifts!*

Do you feel comfortable going off-registry when buying wedding gifts? I think for me it depends on how well I know the couple and their taste. I still cringe at the first off-registry wedding gift I ever bought (and maybe the first wedding gift I ever bought!). When my childhood best friend got married right after college, I wanted to get them something they could use for fun date nights. So I got them a brightly colored tiffin box, a Twister towel, and maybe a gift certificate for local take-out. I envisioned a fun, flirty picnic with a game of Twister (we were 22!). Looking back, I wish I had gotten them something a bit more timeless than a Twister towel--eek!

When looking for something a little more classy than my Twister towel gift, I like to think about something the couple would really use & enjoy, or something they wouldn't think to ask for from their wedding guests. So, here are a few ideas if you're in need of an off-registry wedding gift.

A Subscription Service. If your friends are really into wine, beer, or something edible, get them a subscription to receive something new every month. Wine of the month clubs are tried and true, but there are also craft beer clubs, and even ice cream subscription services like Milk Made in NYC.

A Fun Tool Kit. This would be especially great for new homeowners. Throw in a gift card to Lowe's or Home Depot.

Untitled

Untitled

Mason Jar Blender. If you've been to a wedding over the past few years, you've certainly seen mason jars in use--as decor, as drinking glasses, as vases...the list goes on. So, very likely, the newlyweds will have a lot of jars leftover. Help them put them to use with this awesome mason jar blender.

Untitled

Pinhole Press Gift Certificate. I've mentioned Pinhole Press before (I gave them to my roommates before they both got married), and their gift cards are a great way to let your friends customize their own gift. They offer photo books, framed photos, and even wine bottle labels.

What about you? Do you cling to the registry, or do you prefer to get something a little more unexpected?

Wedding Season: Bridesmaid Gifts

Untitled

*I'm not a wedding blogger by any means (just a seasoned wedding guest), but with wedding season upon us I thought I'd share a few posts for brides and wedding guests alike. Up first: bridesmaid gifts!*

I'm not sure if it's a broader wedding trend, but among my friends I've noticed a mini-trend (trendlet?) of giving bridesmaids gifts that they can wear during the wedding festivities, of course, but also something they'd love to wear on any old day. My old roommate Megan gave her bridesmaids turquoise earrings, and she chose a few different types to suit her friend's style. And remember my friend Cholie's gorgeous wedding in Ireland? She gave each bridesmaid a cardigan that she customized with different buttons.

So, if you're a bride looking for a gift for your maids, or just looking for some new summer jewelry, here's a few ideas.

A simple, understated necklace. There's tons of these on Etsy, this one is by curious creatures.

A bright bracelet with her initial, like these from C.Wonder.

Lockets! For bridesmaids, it'd be fun to get a different locket for each girl. Again, Etsy is a great place to find these. (Above lockets from here & here.)

Fun, bright earrings. I've recently given and received the bright orange Kate Spade studs, and I'm obsessed with them. And the pop of neon on the brass earrings from curious creatures would be so fun and unexpected at a wedding.

How about you? Have you ever given or received a bridesmaid gift you really loved?

Remember when I mentioned that my roommate was moving out to become a Mrs.? Well, this past weekend she did just that. They were married on Monday, so the whole weekend was full of fun wedding build up. From baking (cakes and cobblers, and assisting with three peach pies) to rehearsing to picnicking and catching up with friends who have moved away. The wedding itself was just lovely. With seersucker, vintage doilies, a 40s-style jazz band and a table full of pie, it somehow felt appropriate for Memorial Day, without feeling theme-y at all.

Congrats, Megan & Derek!

Celebration season continued with a wedding! My former roommate Kaylie got hitched, I made them a tiny wedding cake, and then I slept all day Sunday to recover. Sorry for the lack of photos! I hope your weekend was lovely :)
