Oh, friends. The last time I was here it was July. It was hot and muggy and there were fireworks, and now it's brisk and chilly and there are falling, colorful leaves. Sorry about that.

A friend mentioned to me once that there's a catalogue on the Internet, somewhere, of all the blog posts where the author apologizes for going quiet for a few days, weeks, whatever. And it's comical that so many of these exist, because on the one hand there's the early-Internet belief that still rings in our ears: "Who cares what you had for lunch?" In other words, you don't know the people you're writing for, so why apologize? And on the other hand, we all know that we come to enjoy the daily dose of levity, beauty, etc. that we get from our favorite bloggers. And so, not hearing from them for awhile feels a bit like having a phone call ignored.

All that to say, I just haven't had much to say lately. But for whatever reason, today I felt like telling you that I think the soundtrack to When Harry Met Sally is the perfect music to listen to during autumn. So, here I am, telling you that. Besides the fact that When Harry Met Sally is a great movie to watch in the fall (it's right up there with You've Got Mail), Harry Connick Jr.'s jazzy soundtrack is full of the type of melodies and older songs ("Don't Get Around Much Anymore") that sound just a little like...Christmas music. But, it isn't Christmas music, so it's totally appropriate to listen to in November. (And, as a bonus, there's an instrumental version of "Winter Wonderland" on it, but that's not your fault. You were just sitting there listening to a movie soundtrack and a Christmas song came on. It'd be rude to skip it.)

Do you (are you still out there?) have a favorite album for this time of year?Lizhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13863323366974612082noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4262502262354120878.post-1947352847941072302013-07-03T13:53:00.000-04:002013-07-03T13:54:35.607-04:00Patriotic Party Food
Did the month of July sneak up on you, too? Somehow June zoomed by and suddenly the 4th of July is tomorrow. Yikes! So, I thought I'd round up a few ideas in case you're on the hook to bring a dish to a BBQ. Or, perhaps you're hosting a BBQ that you only planned yesterday, and you're out of propane. No, just me? Sneaky, sneaky July 4.
Is there anything more magical than fireflies on a summer night? Photographer Yume Cyan captured what looks like hundreds of them in this series of long exposure photos, taken in a forest in Japan. I pretty much want to live in these images.
Have you heard about the new nature documentary North America? I don't have cable so I hadn't heard a thing about it until my friend Kate introduced me to it last weekend (and we stayed up into the wee hours of the morning watching the first three episodes). It's similar to shows like Planet Earth but focuses on, as the title would suggest, just North America. The landscapes are gorgeous, but the footage they capture of the animals is insane.
From giant jellyfish to chipmunks fights to a one-eyed bobcat (yes, really), nature is totally mind blowing.
Oops. Somehow, I let weeks go by without blogging. But I've had some fun weekends in the meantime, filled with ice cream and secret garden wandering, so I thought I'd smash them into one post and make an effort to not let weeks go by again. Because it's nearly officially summer, and there is plenty to talk about. Popsicles and weekends away and sunsets and rooftops, I hope. Lizhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13863323366974612082noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4262502262354120878.post-67145104400298181782013-05-22T10:04:00.000-04:002013-05-22T10:04:00.581-04:00Summer Getaways

Let's move on to summer, shall we? It unofficially starts this weekend (did Memorial Day sneak up on anyone else?) and while I'm more of a Spring gal for the most part, I get excited for summer getaways. I like them to be close-ish to home (so the relaxing can start a.s.a.p.) lazy but also full (like how summer days felt when you were nine), and with plenty of summer-y food (preferably cooked outside and enjoyed with a cold beer).

So when I ran across this New York Magazine slideshow of fantasy summer rentals, it got my wheels spinning. Some of these definitely sit in the "fantasy" category with their hefty price tags, but Airbnb is sure to have plenty of places to rent with just as much charm. But let's dream for a minute, ok?

I'm ready to pack a bag and hit the road. Do you have fun travel plans for the long weekend?

Do you remember any of your graduation gifts? All I remember of my high school graduation was receiving two Sacagawea dollar coins taped into a card from a distant great aunt. While I'm sure I received plenty of thoughtful gifts (and I do remember a few checks slipped into cards!) that strange gift is pretty much all I remember. So I thought it might be fun to put together a few things that a new grad (especially a college grad) could use to make their new desk space special, and a gift that might be a tad more memorable than coins.

For this gift I picked up an oversized owl mug (for coffee or to hold pencils!), a pretty gold chevron notebook, a few rolls of washi tape, useful sticky notes, and classy gold paperclips. For a fun little touch, I covered a pack of pencils with washi tape (following this super-simple tutorial).

I actually put this gift together for my younger sister when she got a new job recently, so these ideas would work equally well as a gift for a college grad, or a care package for a friend with a new job.Lizhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13863323366974612082noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4262502262354120878.post-12443707366126116562013-05-15T00:11:00.000-04:002013-05-15T00:11:20.622-04:00(A Rainy & Relaxing) Weekend in Pictures
It was a quiet and relaxing weekend, spent wrangling a wriggly Wren (who is a baby, not a bird), watching the rain, and enjoying some live music. This weekend (which I realize is now four days ago, but humor me) I confirmed what I've suspected for awhile: I have two homes. New York feels like home. When I'm gone too long, I get that sighing, happy feeling of relief when I'm back here. But Northern California, where I grew up, is still home, no matter how long I've been away. The site of the golden hills, sometimes covered in houses, sometimes rolling untouched towards the bay...they get me every time. So this weekend was near perfect in my book. A few days in San Francisco (during a rare, rare heat wave!) and then a couple in my hometown, both with friends who've known me nearly my whole life. It was wonderful.

I love hearing why other people love New York (or their own favorite city), especially when it's from someone I wouldn't expect. Like actress Kathy Najimy in New York Magazine:

What makes someone a New Yorker?
A rusty battery in their heart that never runs out? An insatiable unending current of desire to create and be astounded? An unwarranted excitement for spring clothes that people in normal-weathered places take for granted? A pull to stop and really listen to and appreciate the guy in front of the McDonald's in Times Square playing "Moonglow" on his sax? When they are hideously mean one moment and then the next they would give their life for you? That's a New Yorker.
This weekend my friend Nicolle and I headed west to Colorado to visit an NYC friend who moved out there last year. We had a low key weekend of enjoying suburban comforts (Target! thrift stores! a washing machine!) while being highly entertained by the energetic two year old, Ellie. Ellie refused to learn our names, so Nicolle and I were "girl" all weekend. As in, "Girl, come to Ellie's room." "Play play-doh, Girl." Pretty cute. And it's always nice to get out of the city for a bit, but my heart definitely skips a beat when I see the lights of Manhattan twinkling from the air. Good to be home.Lizhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13863323366974612082noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4262502262354120878.post-34987262446501600872013-04-19T09:30:00.000-04:002013-04-24T18:21:03.962-04:00For Your Friday
Because it's Friday, and because Mr. Rogers is wonderful, here's a video of Mr. Rogers learning to breakdance. Also, the very wise Mr. Rogers quote that's been passed around a lot this week, in the aftermath of the events in Boston, reminding us to look for the helpers. Happy weekend!
Wouldn't these cute spoons be perfect to have around for picnics? This weekend was all about wedding cake. Finishing baking, frosting and delivering the cake for my roommate's wedding, then topping it with pink peonies. I loved it! (Are you supposed to compliment your own cakes? Oops, oh well!) Other than the wedding it was a low key weekend, recovering from a bit too much celebrating and visiting my friend's new puppy who has polka dotted paws. Hope your weekend was lovely, friends!

I love a good movie or show set in another time period, don't you? It's like watching history come alive. Netflix knows this about me, that's why I have several "taste preference rows" (or whatever they're called) based on period films. (One is even called "Sentimental Romantic 20th Century Period Pieces" ...yikes, embarrassing.) So when I heard about Call the Midwife, set in 1950s London, I pretty much inhaled it.

Based off the memoirs of Jennifer Worth, who was a midwife in 1950s London, the show follows new midwife Jenny as she learn the ropes from her new friends and a few nuns. I wasn't initially drawn in by the idea of a show about midwives, but it ended up being really fascinating. And of course there's love interests, eccentric characters, and everything else you'd want from a great British period drama. The first season is available to watch on Netflix, and the second season just started on PBS! It's a good holdover until Downton is back.
Happy (day late) Easter! I hosted the annual Easter brunch in my back garden (well, not mine, exactly) yesterday, and it was a delightful time. I gave up pretty much all fun food (grains, dairy, sugar...) for Lent, so I went a bit overboard with the baking: biscuits, cinnamon rolls, and a cake in the shape of a bunny. Our littlest pal Wren came and entertained us with her endearing giggles. She was only a twinkle in her parents' eyes when these Easter brunches started!

I hope your Easter was lovely :)

If you're still planning your Easter dinner menu, here are a few tasty-sounding recipes. If I were making Easter dinner, I think I'd make this whole menu!

Roasted Shoulder of Lamb - A bit simpler than a rack of lamb, if you've never made lamb before.

Scalloped Potatoes with Leeks - I really have a thing for leeks at this time of year, so these creamy scalloped potatoes sound amazing.

Is it a little late to talk about Easter? It is in the blog world, but in my world I'll still be grocery shopping for ingredients for Sunday on Saturday (and probably Sunday, too) so if you're anything like me you could probably still use a recipe or two. First, brunch. I think growing up, Easter was about Easter dinner. But as I've started spending Easter with friends in the city, Easter is all about brunch. The lucky years (weather-wise) find us outside in a garden or a park, celebrating amidst sunshine and celebratory baked goods. When spring is slow to come, like this year, we're indoors, relying on springy dishes and cheery tulips to get the celebration going. Wherever you find yourself this Easter, I hope one of these recipes makes it onto your table :)

Spring Vegetable and Goat Cheese Tart - I always want goat cheese and herbs during this meal, who knows why, so this tart is a great way to get my fix.

Almond Berry Coffee Cake - Another thing I insist on (at least in the dishes I'm contributing) at Easter brunch is lemon-y baked goods. Lemon just tastes bright & spring-y. So this Almond Berry Coffee Cake with lemon zest certainly fits the bill.

Asparagus and Pancetta Hash - Potatoes + meat is always a necessary brunch component, right?

Deviled Eggs, Four Ways - As a kid, did anyone else eat egg salad that was a little pink, or a little blue in the weeks after Easter? The leftover dyed Easter eggs had to be eaten! Perhaps that's why I crave deviled eggs at this time of year.

Mustard Roasted Potatoes - I usually make these at Christmas, but have discovered they're equally good at room temperature as they are hot. So they're ideal if they have to travel a bit, or sit out on a picnic blanket for awhile.

Blueberry Beignets - If you're feeling adventurous. (Adventurous for me = frying something.)
This weekend was a weekend away from the city, but of a different sort. Some friends and I volunteered to be the kitchen crew on our church's men's retreat, so while we got out of the city for a few days, we spent most of our time indoors prepping food, cooking, and cleaning. It was a lot of work, and our heads hit the pillows exhausted, but it snowed during our one hour break on Saturday, which was lovely. And even though it was definitely a working weekend, there was plenty of fun to be had. Hope your weekend was lovely, if a bit more restful than mine :)Lizhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13863323366974612082noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4262502262354120878.post-82132413461834435172013-03-15T10:27:00.000-04:002013-03-19T11:31:26.104-04:00Pretty Weather
You know how a pretty notepad makes writing the grocery list a little bit less of a chore? Or how a bunch of $3 grocery store daffodils can make a cold apartment seem warmer? This weather app is like that. It's called good weather, and it gives you your weather with a dose of pretty (plus a little game to play!) Pretty weather is a welcomed little something when the temperature dips from nearly-spring 50s to back-to-winter 30s. Plus, you can find out what the weather is like in Oz and Neverland :)

Happy Friday, folks! I hope your weather is pretty.

One of my earliest memories is driving over the San Francisco Bay Bridge at sunrise, wrapped in a blanket in the backseat of the station wagon on the way to the airport. I crane my neck to look up, up, up at the cables stretching towards the pink and purple sky. The sight of that bridge, especially early in the morning or late at night, always spurs a feeling of anticipation. For most people, the Golden Gate is their iconic San Francisco bridge. For me, it's always been the Bay Bridge, the one that took me to the city and home again.

So when my friends in the Bay Area started talking about the new Bay Bridge light installation, I wasn't so sure about it. The Bay Bridge, sparkling? I don't know about that. The installation (by artist Leo Villareal) adds 25,000 LED lights to the bridge that will create a nightly light show on the bridge for the next two years. Similarly, I'm in the minority (at least among my friends) who doesn't think the Eiffel Tower needs to sparkle nightly, and I was dismayed when I heard that they were adding an LED light system to the Empire State Building. These structures are beautiful and iconic on their own, do we really need to guild the lily?

Though I do have to admit that the Empire State Building lights turned out to be cooler than I thought they'd be, and they didn't take away from the classic view of the building like I worried. What do you guys think of adding sparkle to architectural landmarks? Fun or frivolous?

As with most of the smaller holidays, when I think about St. Patrick's Day I much prefer the childhood version to the adult version (similar to my views on Halloween and Valentine's Day). I'll take wearing green, jokingly pinch people, and sprinkling shamrock confetti over a drunken parade and green beer any day! So, in the spirit of a light-hearted St. Patty's celebration, I whipped up a batch of green cupcakes topped with Lucky Charms: Luck O' The Irish cupcakes!

To add the first dose of green to the the cupcakes, I sprinkled the batter (plain white cake mix from a box!) with two colors of green jimmies. When they bake into the cupcakes, they come out like leprechaun-inspired Funfetti.

See? I loved the unexpected pops of green on the inside. And the lighter green didn't show up as well, so you could certainly use one color of green if that's all you can find. I made up a batch of my new favorite frosting, swiss meringue buttercream, because it's not too sweet. But all these really need is a vanilla frosting base + green food coloring, and you're ready for the "lucky" part.

Lucky Charms! They're crunchy & sweet, so they add a fun texture to the cupcakes. Plus, have you ever met a person who doesn't like Lucky Charms? Initially, I just used the colorful marshmallows. But after a taste test, my taste tester agreed that a little bit of the cereal pieces added a nice flavor.

And there you have it! Luck O' The Irish cupcakes. I'm pretty sure if you're holding one (or a box) of these, you can't be pinched :)
Friends, guess what happened? The sun came out! It was glorious, especially following a snow storm. It was in the 50s and sunny on Saturday, and I saw people in shorts! A little overzealous, but I admire the sentiment. In addition to sun, there was baking, birthday partying, and amazing-music-listening. A stellar weekend. Hope yours was the same!Lizhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13863323366974612082noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4262502262354120878.post-59748339518067427812013-03-08T12:45:00.000-05:002013-03-08T12:46:03.593-05:00A Song for Your Friday

Sorry for the light posting this week, friends. It's been a dreary, uninspiring week here in NYC. But tonight I'm going to see <a href="The Lone Bellow perform, which should provide a much-needed dose of inspiration and fun. I love their video for "Two Sides of Lonely." The beginning is quiet and snowy, which is exactly how NYC feels and looks today.
