Happy (day late) Easter! I hosted the annual Easter brunch in my back garden (well, not mine, exactly) yesterday, and it was a delightful time. I gave up pretty much all fun food (grains, dairy, sugar...) for Lent, so I went a bit overboard with the baking: biscuits, cinnamon rolls, and a cake in the shape of a bunny. Our littlest pal Wren came and entertained us with her endearing giggles. She was only a twinkle in her parents' eyes when these Easter brunches started!

I hope your Easter was lovely :)

Easter Recipes: Dinner

Untitled

If you're still planning your Easter dinner menu, here are a few tasty-sounding recipes. If I were making Easter dinner, I think I'd make this whole menu!

Untitled

Mint & Pea Crostini with Parmesan - A simple appetizer that tastes bright, like spring.

Untitled

Roasted Shoulder of Lamb - A bit simpler than a rack of lamb, if you've never made lamb before.

Untitled

Scalloped Potatoes with Leeks - I really have a thing for leeks at this time of year, so these creamy scalloped potatoes sound amazing.

Untitled

Asparagus with Mustard Vinaigrette - Take advantage of the greenmarket (if you're lucky enough to have asparagus at yours already) with this simple side dish.

Untitled

Cream Cheese and Chive Biscuits - Um, yum.

Untitled

Strawberries and Cream - A simple dessert, since everyone will be stuffed!

Easter Recipes: Brunch

Untitled

Is it a little late to talk about Easter? It is in the blog world, but in my world I'll still be grocery shopping for ingredients for Sunday on Saturday (and probably Sunday, too) so if you're anything like me you could probably still use a recipe or two. First, brunch. I think growing up, Easter was about Easter dinner. But as I've started spending Easter with friends in the city, Easter is all about brunch. The lucky years (weather-wise) find us outside in a garden or a park, celebrating amidst sunshine and celebratory baked goods. When spring is slow to come, like this year, we're indoors, relying on springy dishes and cheery tulips to get the celebration going. Wherever you find yourself this Easter, I hope one of these recipes makes it onto your table :)

Untitled

Spring Vegetable and Goat Cheese Tart - I always want goat cheese and herbs during this meal, who knows why, so this tart is a great way to get my fix.

Untitled

Almond Berry Coffee Cake - Another thing I insist on (at least in the dishes I'm contributing) at Easter brunch is lemon-y baked goods. Lemon just tastes bright & spring-y. So this Almond Berry Coffee Cake with lemon zest certainly fits the bill.

Untitled

Asparagus and Pancetta Hash - Potatoes + meat is always a necessary brunch component, right?

Untitled

Deviled Eggs, Four Ways - As a kid, did anyone else eat egg salad that was a little pink, or a little blue in the weeks after Easter? The leftover dyed Easter eggs had to be eaten! Perhaps that's why I crave deviled eggs at this time of year.

Untitled

Mustard Roasted Potatoes - I usually make these at Christmas, but have discovered they're equally good at room temperature as they are hot. So they're ideal if they have to travel a bit, or sit out on a picnic blanket for awhile.

Untitled

Blueberry Beignets - If you're feeling adventurous. (Adventurous for me = frying something.)

The Brighter Side

Something about the mood of these pirate party photos I saw on Design Mom (taken by Eric Josjo) reminded me of one of my all time favorite ads. It's an absolutely gorgeous ad by a fantastic director, with a pretty ending that's a perfect start to Easter weekend. Hope yours is bright :)

The Manmosa

I don't know if you know this, but Easter is kind of girlie. Or at least, that's what some guy friends were saying in the days leading up to Easter brunch (some of those guys showed up in lavender and pale pink...just sayin'). So, in an effort to make Easter a bit more manly, my roommate suggested we serve Blue Sunrises instead of mimosas. A Blue Sunrise, it turns out, is a drink that she and some of the aforementioned guys invented on a cabin weekend as a way to drink beer in the morning by mixing it with orange juice.

The Blue Sunrises were a hit, only I kept calling them "Manmosas" since they were on the menu to make brunch a bit less girlie. We used Blue Moon beer (hence the name Blue Sunrise), but I'm sure any wheat beer would be fine. If you make these, play around with the proportions. I liked about 70% beer to 30% orange juice, but a lot of the guys were filling the glass nearly full with beer and adding just a splash of juice. Enjoy!

After a week-long forecast of rain on Easter, the weather turned sunny and warm, just long enough to enjoy a leisurely brunch with friends to celebrate Easter. I made a ton of cold-brewed coffee (too much, actually, we're still drinking the surplus) and brought out yellow striped straws for the occasion. It finally feels like summer (humid in April?) spring is here!

Last minute Easter ideas

Make some Hot Cross Buns. See if you can do it without getting the song stuck in your head.

Make confetti eggs: fill hollowed eggs with confetti, and one with glitter. Have an Easter egg hunt, then smash the confetti eggs over people's heads to see who "won" the glitter egg.

Whip up a batch of bright, spring-y lemon curd. Eat it on scones, biscuits, or muffins at Easter brunch. Or just right out of the jar.

Decorate eggs without getting your hands messy, or smelling like vinegar. Use string, beads, buttons and washi tape like these lovely eggs in Styled magazine.

Yes, Peeps will be half price in a matter of days, but Rachel's homemade ones are so much prettier.

Hunt down an assortment of eggs. How much fun would it be to dye an ostrich egg? If you have kids, I bet they'd be fascinated with all the different types of eggs.

And if you're in NYC and looking for a place to celebrate Easter, my church has two Easter services and a Good Friday service tonight. I'd love to see you there!
